Brianna Sayegh was one of the 95,000 original applicants for the scholarship, and of these applicants, Coca-Cola chose 1,896 semifinalists based on academic achievements, leadership, and community support services. In the end, 150 semifinalists will be rewarded with a college scholarship worth $20,000.
“We believe that identifying these young leaders throughout the country and encouraging their passion for serving others not only empowers the students but also lifts up those around them,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President-Elect of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.
Sayegh, who is considering attending Mt. Saint Mary College or SUNY Oneonta, has shown activism in both a local school setting and the community as a whole.
She plays field hockey and basketball in addition to running track and field. Sayegh is a member of Girl Scouts, Science Honor Society, Brewster Students Against Cancer, Mu Alpha Theta and president of Brewster High School’s Varsity Club.
Sayegh is now in phase two of the application, which involves writing essays, getting recommendations, and submitting transcripts. Coca-Cola will select 250 regional finalists by the end of January and conduct online or in-person interviews before naming the 150 Coca-Cola Scholars. The winners will be invited to Atlanta in April for a banquet and Leadership Development Institute that is conducted by alumni of the program.
